According to the respondents majority of the respondents give the preferences to the operation of the small to mid-size fleets. It can be observed that trade cycles are held at an average of 11.8 years, while the truck tractors are replaced on an average of every 6.7 years. Some other questions which were asked by the survey respondents included the number of vehicles which ran on the alternative fuel. There were around eight percent of respondents who reported the use of fleet as an alternative source. It was observed that most of the career options were impacted because of the large number of influences such as driver experiences, performance and difference in the compensation models. The operating cost can also be impacted because of the operating cost, purchase payments and tire costs, the driver pays, the average marginal costs, the fuel costs, the equipment lease or purchase payments, the cost of repair and maintenance, truck insurance premiums, tire costs, the cost involved in paying the toll taxes, the wages of the drivers and the rise in the cost trends.
There are a number of issues which are to be faced by the truck industry. The first of these includes the dynamic shift in the priorities of the industries in the past 10 years. In the early years, the rise in the cost was the primary concern along with the ability to do the identification of the commercial drivers. Other critical issues include the truck security, driver training, costs of insurance and the environmental issues. Another issue is the hours of service. Another major issue which has to be faced is the driver shortage issues. It is a major problem and needs an urgent solution. This can be done by working with state and federal authorities, by doing proper research and quality recruitments, by continuation of the work to streamline the transition from the military CDL to a Civilian so as to attract more and more veterans who are the part of this industry. Another major issue includes the compliance, safety and accountability issue. This can be resolved by pushing for the crash accountability and advocating for the removal of public view scores in all the categories. Driver retention is another major issue and the proposed strategies for the same include the improvement in the work/life balance, having a healthy lifestyle, doing the research on the relationship between the compensation models of the drivers, studying the effectiveness of the career retention programs.
