Implications of Internet addiction
This addiction is not merely a behavioral change in today’s generation, but if it remains unchecked it could become a clinical mental disorder. Internet addiction is barring us from living a normal life. The wastage of time cuts off from society and how it is hampering growth of our children. The horrors internet addiction is capable of presenting to human beings can be estimated from the fact that an addicted person would not be able to find his place when faced with the real world. Our relationships are also getting affected by this indulgence. People are not able to make time for their loved ones because being online has become more attractive. It has become a common site in homes and restaurants alike that even at dining table all the members of a family are busy with their mobile phones or tablets. The new society culture of being updated and keeping others updated about your life is working as a drug. It has become compulsive for some people to put everything they do, eat or see on the social media sites. Similarly the compulsion of gaming online is making children of our generations physically weaker. From affecting their eye sights to making them introverts, our children are slowly becoming slaves of the digital world. Children are forgetting the outdoor games and thereby it’s getting difficult to teach them the qualities of life like team work, compassion and companionship. The very growth as a person could be affected if we fall prey to internet addiction. If we cease to socialize we might cease to be a society as well.
The problems related to internet addiction is that a person suffering from it tends to spend more time in solitary isolation, leaving less time to spend with real people around them. They gradually become socially awkward (Jacob, para.4). It is also observed that the people who find themselves addicted to internet shows high level of mental depressive symptoms (Morrison & Gore, pp.121). A depressed and lonely person seeks the comfort of computer and internet where he can find solace without his privacy being disturbed. But gradually that very means of comfort turns into the reason of further depression, social cut-offs and mental discomforts. It has become a vicious cycle of compulsion and hence an addiction.
I can effectively relate to the problems facing by our generation and possible problems that are staring to loom on us. Affect of internet addiction could give rise to human beings sans any human emotion and lack of empathy for each other.
