Robert Sternberg is a psychologist who has developed a theory which goes by the name of triangular theory of love. He presented this theory in 1985 when he was working in the Department of Psychology at the Yale University. A movie that fits the Sternberg triangular analysis in the past five years is the first movie of a trilogy by the name of “Fifty Shades of Grey”. The movie depicts the emotions of both lead characters i.e. Anastasia and Christian Grey in a very subtle way. The characters go on from being very formal to being very intimate and fall in love eventually.
The first component of the Sternberg theory is love intimacy which could be clearly observed in the movie. Anastasia first meets Grey when she goes to take an interview in place of her roommate who falls sick. They both are attracted to each other in the first meeting itself. But, gradually Grey realises that he cannot stay away from Ana and that he wants to have physical relationship with her. One day Ana goes out with her friends and ends up drunk dialling Grey. Grey instantly tells her that he would be coming to pick her. When Ana wakes up next morning, she finds herself wearing Grey’s clothes. Then, when she is eating a slice of bread, Grey takes a bite from the bread that is between Ana’s teeth. One more intimate act is when Grey tells Ana that he wants to have sex with her but would do so only after paperwork, but ends up making out with her in the elevator.
