The article “Cultural learning in the EFL classroom: the role of visuals” by Tamas Kiss and Csilla Weninger, is the article being reviewed in the work. The article review is done to gain a broader knowledge of how cultural learning in EFL would be helpful for language learners. The role of visuals assessed in the study is interesting as not so many researchers in the field focus on the role played by visuals. For instance, researcher As Tomlinson (2012, 156) notes that “There seems to be very little published on what teachers and learners do with materials in the classroom”. The article of Kiss and Weninger is reviewed here. The elements being reviewed are the form of research methods used, the insights gained, and how the research could be improved. Other research studies on the subject help to critically analyse claims and methods made by Kiss and Weninger.
In my proposed research work, I would undertake a primary research method to study the specific differences of individual influences in interpretation and cultural interpretation. The form of data collected would be qualitative data. Primary data collected would be coded with the three categories identified by researchers Kiss & Weninger (2017). Therefore, once these categories are identified, the research purpose could be developed to now assess how culturally aligned the individual responses could be. This could help test the assumption made by Kiss & Weninger (2017) that individual meanings are indeed construed in the cultural space would be tested.
The article of Kiss & Weninger (2017) argued how cultural interpretations as understood from images would influence the learning of an EFL student. When EFL student and instructor are aware of this influence they can then prepare better. The review analysis of the article revealed that the insights developed by the researchers are indeed supported in existing literature works. There are some areas of research and assumptions that require better clarity. Further research on the subject addressing these concerns would be helpful for EFL learning improvement and for even general study environment improvement.
