Media freedom is challenged in Japan. The rule of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is one of the reasons portrayed for extensive media control. In terms of World Press freedom, Japan was ranked 72 which was a much lower position from 61, the ranking in an earlier year. At one end, reports exist of alarming decrease in media freedom. In the year 2016, television anchors were removed at the same time from three different networks. This was a time when a series of dismissals happened in the media context. A high-profile media control agenda was observed here. Since the December of 2012, much of the media voices were muted. Under government agenda, those networks that were politically biased or those that were liberal were subdued to a certain extent. At another end, people do opine that the media control is not so bad, and the situation is exaggerated.

The Japanese media observers make relative comparisons and believe that by international standards, Japanese media control is not so bad. Significant pressures are placed on the media and Japanese and foreign media observers agree, but they do not agree that the situation is worse. Secrecy laws were implemented in some countries and investigative reported were even subpoenaed in Bush and Obama administrations in countries like the United States, but the situation of Japan was not that bad. Even in comparison to what was happening in the PRC, whose administrative region was Hong Kong, the control exercised in Japan was not considered as worse. However, a situation did worry observers. The situation is that of how willingly Japanese media allowed itself to be silenced. They voiced some concerns but mostly went silent as required and this was in contrast with nations like the United States. “What has been worrying, however, is the willingness of major Japanese media to silence themselves in response to a level of behind-the-scenes chiding by Abe administration officials that most U.S. journalists would probably just laugh off”.
