From the past three years of my own working experiences with a company with over thousand employees, I met and worked with different leaders. Two of them gave me profound impressions. They are both very experienced but have different leadership styles. One is more professional and strict and the other is more kind. I like the latter. He was our department manager and had gentle disposition. He liked to share mistakes as examples of learning. Since he came from a different industry, he always had a learning attitude. He preferred to figure out solutions along with us and didn’t just ask us to think about it. He knew very well that we were the people who interacted with customers on a daily basis and we knew more about them.

When I made a mistake in a very important yearly contract, he chose to treat me with tolerance rather than holding me accountable for my mistake. This gave me more confidence and motivations to correct my mistake. I learned to be patient while talking to customers and providing a solution to the problem. Meeting the increasingly diverse needs of the people stifles creativity. Rigid management is like human skeleton, while flexible management is like human skin and flesh. We need to have all these to become human. Similarly, combination of rigid and flexible management is required to build most effective management style.
