My native language is Chinese, and I come from a Chinese language and cultural background as well. I am attempting to learn more English in Australia because I believe English as a mainstream language could serve to connect me with other languages as well as my own. In my learning in Australia, I have seen how the lack of knowing the mainstream language of English results in many issues. On a personal level, I believe we are moving towards a more culturally inclusive place with respect to languages but we are still not there yet. It is a work in progress. Therefore, writing this essay and reflecting on how mainstream language of English introduces problems and opportunities is something personally important to me.

I believe as a Chinese language speaker, learning English is no longer a problem to my language. I don’t believe I lose out on my language just because I am learning a new one. However, this is because I was given the language and cultural understanding from my parents. As the case study reflects, not everybody has this indulgence. People like Coleen lose out major benefits in not knowing their language and cultural background. It is critical for everybody to connect back to their languages and cultural backgrounds as it teaches them values of strength and resilience that nothing else can parallel. In this context, the mainstream language of English could be used to learn, and look up resources and also connect with the likeminded. Therefore, I truly believe that English becomes a resource or vehicle to help connect indigenous language learners.
