People belonging to a specific culture or race often face some common assumptions prevailing in the society about them. These assumptions are termed as stereotypes. Stereotypes are usually truths about a few people belonging to a class, race or culture; which are then generalized and imposed upon the whole category of people. These stereotypes may not prove to be correct about specific individual and hence be hurtful to him. Stereotypes can be in different contexts, like gapped-tooth people are lucky, firefighters are brave, blonde haired people are intelligent etc. Some of the stereotypes are so general and common that they may not be hurtful for anyone but when these stereotypes are targeted about specific race, ethnicity or culture, it may result in prejudice and oppression. These stereotypes possess great threat to equality in society. Racial stereotypes are flooded in the society, like it is a general perception about white people that they are all racists. In this case, folks of today are getting punished due to sins of past. This stereotype was built due to harsh behavior of white people towards colored ones in the past. However, due to harsh history it does not imply that all white folks today are racists. Similarly, it is assumed that Middle Easterners keep hatred towards Americans. Though some of them may hate Americans, but it does not mean that all of them do so. There are many other racial stereotypes in the world like, it is thought that Native Americans love gambling, every Asian knows kung fu, African Americans are the best basketball players etc. On the other hand, cultural stereotypes are generated in intercultural setting. In intercultural societies, everyone is eager to figure out that what is the behavior and thinking of the people of other cultural groups. There generates two types of stereotypes, one concerning to own culture and second concerning other culture. These are called auto and hetero stereotypes respectively. For example, the Chinese think that they are ultimate geniuses, while the Swedes consider the Chinese to be boastful. Similarly,the Swedes think themselves to be well educated, but the Chinese consider them arrogant.
