One program that I participated the most in is an after school program called YYY. We travelled to a local elementary school and taught school age children to make healthy snacks, and it was always fun to work with kids. These helped me gain perspectives about the tools that can be used to teach people. What inspired me to pursue the clinical field was summer volunteer experience at ABC Nursing Home. It was a memorable summer. I found myself really enjoying interaction with the residents and working with everyone on the health care team. By the end of my volunteering, I wondered if this was the direction I want to pursue in my career. To further expose myself in the field, I took a Certified Nurse Assistant course in my junior year. I passed the state registration exam as well as first aid/CPR exam necessary for this position and started working as a CNA in a local long-term care facility called Sunshine Place.

My primary responsibility as a CNA was to assist the residents with activities of daily living. I was involved in the dressing, eating and washing, as well as monitoring vital signs and general medical conditions. Food and nutrition are an important part of our assignments. We are responsible for picking up the tray carts, passing out meals, feeding if necessary, and snacks, especially diabetes snack distribution. CNAs are also the last step to make sure residents receive the proper consistency of meal and drinks, which could be vital for their health. Up until now I really enjoyed my time there. This passion drives me to work even in the weekends. The job completely made me certain that I want to concentrate in the clinical setting. I love how it can be rewarding. I enjoy building relationships with my residents. I think I would definitely bring this positive motivation into my future internships and I would also apply these experiences with clinical nutritional care to my future rotations.
