Alan Lomax was born on 31st January 1915, to born to Bess Brown and John A. Lomax in Austin, Texas, United States. He was third of the four children and his father was a pioneer folklorist and author. He is best known as the 20th century’s most renowned field collector of folk music of America. Lomax also worked as ethnomusicologist, folklorist, archivist, scholar, writer, political activist, film-maker and oral historian. His works in USA and England related to the production of concerts, recordings, and radio shows have a very crucial role in the revival of folds in America as well as Britain in the era of 1940-50s and early 1960s. Lomax initially began with assisting his father in collection of material, as his father was a collector and folklorist. Later, he did this one his own and with other people’s assistance. He has done recording numerous songs and interviews on acetate and aluminium discs for the Archive of American Folk Song. He was director of this archive at the Library of Congress (Szwed 2010).
