The Individual: Stress is a normal response in any environment. Bodies of people are usually designed to handle stress, but this handling mechanism is actually for a very short time only. When a person experiences stress, according to researchers, they go into a bodily routine that helps them fight it. It helps create what is called the fight or the flight response (Cooper et al., 2001). This fight or the flight response is such that it helps the person in immediate danger by physiologically preparing their body towards facing the stressor. This helps the person handle the stress, cope with it and then move on to do other normal things. However, this form of a stress related reaction and action could only happen in the case of stressors that are infrequent. Where the stress is less common, then it could result in efficient coping. Employees in a workplace with less stress and time to cope and handle, it would not face any harm to the individual. However, this is not the case in workplaces. In organizations, it could so happen that stress could be a constant (Taylor et al., 2000). There could be stressors that are repetitive and are a constant and this does not give people the time to turn off their stress response system. The bodily stress response is always active and this puts people into what is medically called the “Generalized Stress Response”. Generalized stress response phases are presented in Appendix A, attached to the literature review.
