High population centres are created because of the Campbell Town and Ross and these areas directly benefit from the water input from the catchment area. The McQuarrie area is seen to provide much of the economic benefit for the places around them in the form of wool and sheep production. Meat production industries are a staple here. Additionally, grains and Lucerne production are identified. Since this is a low seasonal rainfall region, people around the catchment area cannot rely on this area’s water supply for their economic means at all times. They also focus on dry cropping systems. The area provides wood for wood industry, and the wood harvesters abide under the Forestry Act.
Some of the key challenges found in this area are the deterioration of water quality. Effluent treatment at times leads to an increase in algal blooms. Phosphorous loss in upper catchment areas are present and so are the concerns of surface runoff because of effluent water flow areas. Sewage pond effluent contributions are observed here, and these are domestic sewages, discharges and fertilizer by products etc. Fecal contaminations are observed domestically. There is some ecosystem damage similar to the ones that were observed in the case of the South Esk region. Both these catchment areas are seen to have many similarities in the native species. Therefore, the concerns that are observed are also quite the same.
Categorized under three service provisions of the ecosystem framework, it can be said that both ecosystem services provide provisioning services and regulating services. Provisioning services are services of water for industries and people, wood for industries, fibre, aquatic minerals, fishes for food etc. In terms of regulating services, both ecosystems present much scope for effluent regulation, biological control of natural ecosystem of men, water purity control by flow measures etc.
In both the catchment areas, the ecosystem services that provide the best values are the water delivery services. For purpose of agriculture in the Esk catchment or for the purpose of meat manufacturing in the Macquarie region, the water supply services are the best value services. In addition to providing water for industries, water is also being provided for the purpose of the domestic population. Ecosystem services you think will be the most important in terms of delivering value from the ecosystems in question and how would you classify those services.
