Yuchun Li as a champion of famous singing contest make the public in China to know the neutral beauty at the first time. In the famous singing contest, all the participants are girls, and most of the girls are conformed to the traditional beauty standards. But Yuchun, Li became the champion (LILY’s blog. September 15, 2005). Li has short hair, angular face and dresses like a cool boy. Her appearance is totally different from the traditional aesthetics of female. She is not even like a girl, people can use elegance to describe her. But in 2005, she wined the championship because of the high support rate from audience.
And until now, Yuchun Li is also very famous in China. He, P (2005: 51) said that Yuchun Li ‘s win is similar to the win of feminism in China, at the first time women use their neutral aesthetic standards to smash the masculine aesthetic standards which have been dominating for a long time. Yuchun Li became the famous idol for the female audiences at this time. Not only in China, but also in the whole world, feminist’s recognition of female body shows their understanding of the spirit of the time, and the unconscious changes of public concepts will become the scholars’ conscious thought and systematism. Like Gill, R (2007:151) said that the post feminism is women from sex object to sexual subject, women are not simply objectified but also portrayed as active desiring subjects who ‘choose to present themselves in a seemingly objectified manner because it suits their liberated interests to do so’. Through the cases of Yuchun Li, we can find the gender politics in gender discrimination which is shown in Chinese traditional culture, and based on the phenomenon, it also can represent contemporary gender politics in feminism studies.
All in all, celebrity culture as a part of society culture and the political culture can be the medium to show some situations in contemporary society and people’s daily life. The paper has used Sarah Palin’s cases as the examples to show the contemporary gender politics, especially the gender discrimination in politics even in ordinary women’s career.
