The essay is based on critical thinking and analytical study of three texts that reflect totally different domains and diverse issues. Basically, the essay has been categorised into three different sections, each section critically analysed literatures about forced labour, Keeley Hawes’ interview and perception of referendum in case of British Constitution. The paper compressively describes the profound senses of these three texts and assesses critically the argument as well as credibility related to the evidences based on the above mentioned themes on real world scenario and in terms of actuality.

Part 1

Forced Labour and Impact of Effective Laws as well as Business practices

According to the ILO, there are around 21 million people all over the world who get enslaved at present. It is a shocking issue but it is also a fact that drew attention of all people by the recent blog of Aidan McQuade about how good laws, regulations along with effective and moral business practices can contribute towards diminishing of forced labour. There are ample amount of evidences about the ongoing act of slavery which can be seen with naked eyes, when an individual visits South Africa, Bolivia and many other nations. However, this also raises the concern towards modern-day slavery because the issue is not confined in the act of forced labour, as it is also about worst level of workers’ right, child labour, human trafficking etc. While critically analysing this topic of forced labour, one can’t simply overlook the concept of workers’ right (Business & Design, 2012). As per the Global Rights Index 2015 by ITUC North African people and that of the people in Gulf States are treated the worst. Belarus, China, Colombia, Egypt, Guatemala, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Swaziland and UAE are the most affected countries by forced labour where there is no such thing as workers’ rights. The miners, brides, rag pickers, tea pickers are not labourers; they are salves in this world till this date (Bogdanor & Rodriquez, 2014). The first text mainly focuses on the legislations and regulations related issues of forced labour in which there is no mention of these worst conditioned areas. Initially, it has been mentioned that there are approximately 21 million people who are enslaved in different industries, but there is no mention of the highest demography that is exposed with forced labour. Nevertheless, the literature is not about how forced labour has affected the world, rather it puts light on what can be done to bring forced labour to an end. It is quite clear that the undisputed fact of formulation and implementation new legislations by the UK government is not an answer here which has been intensely stated (Crutchfield & Grant, 2012). However, whether these legislations are being followed at the ground root levels or not, observing that is quite necessary, because once a change occurs in legislation, it is the primary responsibility of the citizens, the government and the law enforcement authorities so that the challenges regarding forced labour which is the supply chain issues can be tackled effectively. This issue has been described with the perfect example of California Transparency in Supply Chain Act and how it helped the humanity by embracing new powers of anti-slavery (Hafner-Burton, 2013). The Queen speech is also an epitome here which has been briefly mentioned in the text. The logical perspective yet deceiving one with the unemployment of miners has also been illustrated here as per Dodd-Frank (Ruževičius & Serafinas, 2015). This kind of perception can provoke someone to the think about is it enough to make new legislation? What about the fact that they will lose their jobs and what will happen to them afterwards? The content helps to think beyond the statistics and empirical studies here that are in doubt true, but how can a government really tackle this issue on the ground level and how law-makers can make difference here, has been comprehensively explained in the second part (Robinson, 2014). Relevant and commendable examples of Oxfam at Vietnam and The Bangladesh Accord are also given here by the Sedex supply chain specialist Mark Robertson who is the communications department head and the writer of this text about forced labour and how legislations and good organisational practices as well as activities can really make a difference.

The write-up by Plowman and Dunn deals with the specific issue of importance of knowing a customer and his choice before a product is launched in market for them. Also which is the best qualitative method to provide the best design? The point of consideration is the time taken to conduct the qualitative discussion and reaching a conclusion thereafter. The question asked by researchers are on the approach which should be taken to arrive at the best deign for tool (David, Dunn, 2011).

Empirical, theoretical, sociological and historical overview

This report is a combination of all, empirical for the reason the insight of a person is judged by taking interviews where a lot of preparation goes into asking the right questions, doing group discussion where a person speaks his heart to the actual requirement of a particular design, tool or end product. When people are discussing in an informal environment and experimenting with their thoughts by showing them videos, playing games, music etc., writing down the observations and making an assessment hence, it is the theoretical approach. The study of ethnography and research design is definitely a sociological approach as people are observed from close range on their social behaviour with strangers, their culture, traditional beliefs in an informal setup (Petra, Falin, 2010). The use of product depends upon these behaviours hence closely studying them is important for a researcher. Earlier companies use to hire people to give their ideas on the design of a product or tool, they were hired for temporary and after the product was completed it was never tested on the same set of people hence the idea of qualitative design came into existence so that there is a robust process to desired result from the set of end users who would use and tell the changes to be done to the design. This shows that this has evolved from historical aspects.

School of though

It is the theoretical approach using the science of Ethnography and qualitative processes to get an insight into human behaviour so that best toll design can be provided to the production team and thus the same designed reaches the consumer. A lot of time and efforts are spent by the researcher to get into the life and routine of the consumer. The approach to reach the best product lies in interdisciplinary approach of the researcher and the interest of the person to depict his natural behaviour and culture (Sarah, Tracy, 2013).The qualitative design was a part of pre-production team but it was done at different stages which did not give the desired output, hence a structured design for qualitative research was proposed.

Ethnography

Ethnography is the study of people and their cultures. It is basically a detailed and systematic study of human beings from sociological point of view in an informal environment (Keith, Goffin. and Fred Lemke, and Ursula Koners., 2010).

A brief description of the organisation and the product or service you have chosen.

Uncle Tobys is one of the very popular breakfast cereal companies of Australia. Their product ranges from breakfast cereals, oats and snacks. The company started production in 1893. There first oats product was brought in the market by Clifford Love and Co in Sydney. The company has manufacturing unit in Wahgunyah, on the borders of New South Wales Victoria. During the era of gold rush in Australia, when huge number of immigrants were making way to the land of gold discoveries, two English brothers Leonard and George Parsons also came arrived here. They began their work in Melbourne by manufacturing John Bull Oats. Finally in 1861, they established their company names Parsons Bros, which later came to be known as Uncle Tobys. (Our Story n.d.)

In December 2005, Uncle Tobys parent company Burns Philp separated it from Goodman Fielder Food Company. A joint venture of General Mills and Nestle named Cereal Partners Worldwide (CPW) purchased Uncle Tobys Brand name and manufacturing unit in 2006. Since then the products under brands of CPW, like Milo and Cheerios are being sold under the name of Uncle Tobys in Australia. Uncle Tobys is now a Nestle operated cereal partner in Australia.

The new product chosen for the Uncle Tobys line of products is Gluten-Free ready-to-eat mini lunch meals. The latest diet fad of the new generation is the gluten-free products. Gluten is a naturally occurring protein present in triticale, wheat, barley and rye. The food manufactures from these grains also contains gluten, like malt. Oats are also not completely gluten-free, mainly because of their contamination with gluten containing grains. Market is quickly getting crowded with the gluten-free products. Cereals from Kellogg, Woolworths and other companies are already tapping in the new trend in health and dietary word. People suffering from coeliac disease are supposed to have a gluten-free diet. This involves restraining from all the gluten containing food products. Though the gluten-free breakfast cereals and snack bars are available in the market, the market of mini-meals that is apt for gluten avoiding consumers is still untapped. In this report it would try to analyse the idea and potential of new Gluten-Free ready-to-eat mini lunch meals for Uncle Tobys Company (AIS Sports Nutrition, 2009).
