The proposal of a hotel is being opposed by people who believe that increased tourism will have a negative impact on their way of life and method of earning money. On the other hand, others support the concept as it is likely to bring new job opportunities to the local community along with more development and revenue to the town. There have studies and researches to verify the impact of increased tourism activities in an area, and it is nearly always the case that the average income in areas with high tourism activities grows significantly (Labrador, 2010), and fundamental infrastructure is also improved(Nijkamp, Matias &Sarmento, 2011).
For an outsider, the decision to open a new hotel that focuses on tourism heavily would seem like an easy choice to make. Majority of community and council members are supporting the proposed opening of a tourism oriented hotel. Additionally, Tourism industry is one of the most revenue making industries today and it can bring great number of job opportunities to the area along with a higher standard of living as shown by past trends in various parts of the world (Wattanakuljarus, 2007).
During the discussion in the council meeting, I realized that the proposal of bringing tourism to Pilcopata by opening an 85 room hotel is not immediately going to help everyone, as some people made good points about how such a project could hurt the way they make income (Jeonglyeol Lee, Li & Kim, 2007). A very particular base that affected me was of Alvaro, who relies solely on traditional ways of hunting to provide food for his family and make his living. His fear is obvious that increased tourism will have a negative impact in the area, making it increasingly difficult for him to make sufficient earnings to fulfill his needs. However, I still believe that accepting the proposal of tourism hotel is a welcoming step for the area of Pilcopata. It can be considered as a long term investment for the area which in-time will help to make the town prosperous and economically efficient (Jones, 2005). More job opportunities will also positively affect the family of Alvaro as well.
In the process of community meeting, I was in support of proposed hotel for tourism purposes and my opinion was supported by many others who agreed that Pilcopata is in need of a new industry to improve living standards and offer more job opportunities to local community. However, I feel like the concerns raised by Alvaro were genuine and needs to be addressed while finalizing the tourism plan (Espejo, 2009). It felt like his concerns were taken as mere skepticism while in reality the tourism industry creates real threats to the way he earns his living.
