In year 2013 Oxford officially coined the term ‘Selfie’, which in present scenario means an act of taking photograph of ourselves with help of mobile or computing devices such as iPads etc. (Saltz, 2014). An American think tank known as Pew Research Centre, released a report in 2014 that more than 91% of the teenagers surveyed claimed that they have taken selfies. Reason behind highlighting these aspects is to focus upon the fact that how the concept or act of taking a selfie has got embossed in the mind of youngsters, especially from age group 12-21. There have been several reports, which subtly mentions people obsessed with selfies phenomenon as more of a narcissist which is alarming in nature. Purpose of this research is to closely analyze the concept of selfie, and its impact on the psyche on the young generation in countries like UK or US (Wendt, 2014). Off the late, there have been alarming incidents such as fatal accidents while taking selfies etc. Such trends clearly indicate the fact that a large part of population, especially the young generation is taking the act of taking selfie bit too seriously.
Hence this research will delve in different aspects related to selfie, such as origin of this concept, reason behind its popularity, negative or positive impacts etc. Moreover by the end of this research work, reader should be able to comprehend that whether or not, selfies has negative impact on the psyche of the young generation. If yes, then is there any solution out of it? All such questions and aspects will be explored as part of this research work. As part of research, main focus will be on the academic journals, peer reviewed journals, literatures written on this subject, based on which scholar/researcher will interpret the facts, and include his own understanding to derive a clearer picture about the subject selected for the research.
