This was my first war memorial visit so I really do not have anything to compare against, but from my research on war memorials and how they are sanctified to represent the people who have sacrificed their lives on the war front, I could appreciate that this war memorial indeed has a solemn look about it, a seriousness indicatives of what it stands for. Unlike any other tourist spot, I have visited or a bustling museum gallery, I find the visit quite solemn. In retrospective when I think about why I felt that way even as I was entering a site that was supposed to be educative, I believe it is the idea and thought that I was entering a war memorial that made it solemn and sombre to me. When we enter a cultural site reminding one of happiness, we also tend to reflect the mood of the place.

When I entered this site, I knew the history of the site as I had researched about it, and I knew I was entering a place which stands as reminder and testimony to the many that lost their lives in the warfront, so it was only natural that I was sad. Now researcher Winter (2009) had stated that people feel both sad and grateful for those who fought for them. I felt sad because the war reminded me of the many who died, but I would say my next emotion was that of inspiration. I am not ungrateful, but more than gratefulness, I felt inspired. I felt that these were people who fought for something, they fought for a purpose in their life and this memorial highlighted that, and therefore I was inspired that when I face something, any problem for that matter, I will stand up to. For this inspiration, I am grateful.
