INTRODUCTION TO CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY
A part of Anthropology Socio- Cultural anthropology theories helps us to explain human culture, how culture works, why they are similar and different etc. These theories came into existence since late 19th and early 20th centuries in Europe and America. The various domains of socio-cultural theories are: social evolutionism, diffusionism, particualrism based on historical facts, and functionalism (Zerihun, 2005).
Evolutionism believed in continuous development of cultures and society from primitive stages to “civilized” stages thorough different levels. Diffusionism brought in the idea that culture changes happens due to the accepting and escalating of cultural habits from centers of invention to other areas. Historical particularism came up with the concept that each culture must be empirically studied and analyzed in its own historical context. Functionalism concentrated on culture and Cultural relativism involves specific epistemological and methodological claims. Whether or not these claims require a specific ethical stance is a matter of debate. This principle should not be confused with moral relativism. (Franz, 1963) defines culture as “the totality of the mental and physical reactions and activities that characterize the behavior of the individuals composing a social group collectively and individually in relation to their natural environment, to other groups, to members of the group itself, and of each individual to himself.”
