一些溝通專家聲稱，當一個人認爲自己比與他溝通的人更優秀時，他往往會忽略溝通的微妙細節(Barwise & Meehan, 2008)。因此，無論是在工作場所還是在同事之間，我們對自己的看法可能會成爲理解與你交流內容的障礙。

The word “communication” literally means imparting or exchanging information or news. However, when it comes to us human beings, communication has been a tool of our existence. The effective way with which we communicate our knowledge, thoughts and feelings sets us apart from other species of the world. Communication also allows us to establish links with other people. The word “communication” is derived from the Latin word “communicate”, which means “to share”. Its importance could be understood by the following definition that says “Communication is the vehicle which allows humans to recall the past, think in the present, and plan for the future” (Berko, Spielvogel & Brooks, 1995, p.1).

Importance of Listening
As per the researchers, in an average day, we spend most of our communication time in listening. In one day, an adult spends 70% of his time in communication. More than half of the communication time, i.e. 45% is spent in listening. We use 30% of our communication time in speaking, 16% in reading and 9% in writing. (Adler, Rosenfeld & Proctor, 2001, p. 8).(Fig.1)

Some communication specialists have claimed that when a person treats himself to be superior to the other who is communicating with him, he tends to miss the subtle details of the communication (Barwise & Meehan, 2008). Therefore, whether in workplace or among peers, our perception about ourselves might become barrier in understanding what is communicated to you.
The body language, gestures and tonality of voice reveal a good deal on information. Often some unsaid meaning could be comprehended if we pay attention to the speaker. Things like body posture, physical contact and facial expressions can disclose a lot of information. (Mehrabian, 2008, p. 195)
