All in all, like Geraghty, C (2000: 187) said that, ‘women are particularly likely to be seen as celebrities whose working life is of less interest than their personal life’. Female politicians, as the female celebrity, are also treated differently when compared to their male counterparts. Sarah Palin’s cases can be the example to show women’s plight in politics and even some common careers. Like Palin, female’s images are usually being used as a ‘tool’ to attract some attention from the public and media.
While for the media, they do not like to focus on women’s ability, they just like to report women’s appearance and personal life. And for the public, they are also interested in female’s personal images than their achievement. Through the celebrity, we can find one aspect of the contemporary gender politics — the gender discrimination.
Presence of gender discriminationFor a long time, the gender discrimination appears on a lot of aspects in people’s life, especially in some countries which have a lot of traditional cultures. The typical expression of gender discrimination uses the male aesthetic standard to evaluate female’s images, especially about the female star’s image. According to Basinger, J (1993:165), ‘the persona of a woman star was curbed by age, by changing styles of fashion and glamour, and by limited roles’. And Ouellette, L & Hay, J (2008:119) pointed out women’s situation in gender politics. ‘Historically lacking legitimate opportunities for socioeconomic mobility, women have had to rely on bodily self-improvement as a means to advancement and security within the heterosexual marketplace, and have often been condemned for doing so’. He, F (2005:48) mentioned that because of the differences between physical and social genders, for a long time, females are treated as the objects of masculine aesthetics. In the partition of social roles, female has been seen as an object and present their appearance entirely based on male’s interest and desire. And the patriarchy which has been shown by mass media make female equal to female body, female value equals to the body value.
