Openhium industries sell sports and leisure equipment ranging from ball sports to water and camping sports equipment. The company has retail stores in Auckland, Hamilton, Napier, Wellington, and others. The company is headquartered in Auckland and its founder is John Stokes an ambitious man whose principle is to ‘think-big’ given any situation. The company has an operating CEO. Currently the founder John Stokes wants to expand the company by opening more divisions in New Zealand and also in Australia.
Expanding the company globally is the vision of Stokes. However, the financial position of the company is not supportive of this standpoint. The North Island stores are productive but the South Island stores do not meet the necessary targets. In fact, in the past 4 years the company divisions in the South have not shown any growth. Given this background context, the CEO has now recommended to John Stokes that some of the divisions of the company in the South should be closed and others like Dunedin must be monitored for growth. However, this CEO recommendation is not acceptable to the founder who wants to go with his plans. In the background context of these issues, this research report will attempt to apply theory to understand the situation of the firm and make recommendations on the same.
For the given case study, an applicative analysis of four theories was discussed. The theories were Teleological, Dialectical, Life Cycle and Evolutionary. In the discussion and analysis of the theories it has been found that no one theory would be important than another. It is the consideration of different perspectives of the theory that would actually present a more holistic understanding of the problem for the company. Secondly the psychological commitment to past decision has been discussed here. The psychological commitment to past decisions should be in such a way that it allows for consideration of newer variables.
The process for change for the company has been discussed with the use of the four theories on organizational development that was discussed in part 1. Recommendations have been made that the organization should consider the external and internal element impact on its problem and then initiate a solution accordingly. This will ensure that the organization does not carryover its problem into its expansions, and instead finds a way to support growth in the nonproductive branches as well.
